Welcome to Malawi360.com!

This site has been set up in an attempt to provide a place on the web for all things Malawian. As a wiki, anyone can contribute to the content by simply clicking the 'edit' link at the top of the page. The main criteria for inclusion in this site is for the topic to be relevant to Malawi. Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Places
  • Resorts and Hotels
  • Businesses
  • NGOs
  • People
  • Events
  • History

Where did this come from?

The original content of this site was based on the Malawi section of WikiTravel (licenced under the Creative Commons licence). However, this site is deeper in scope than WikiTravel - it allows pages for specific pages about commercial enterprises such as ADMARC, Mvuu Lodge, Nico, and Korea Garden Lodge. Malawi360 itself is a non-profit making body based in the United Kingdom, funded by donations, commissions and adverts on this site - these funds are used to pay for the server and administrative costs only (all contributors, including the webmaster, are unpaid volunteers). In the unlikely event of there being any remaining surplus funds, they will be donated to an NGO working in Malawi.

Adding and updating content

If in doubt, please go ahead and add a page or link to another website - just remember, it has to be relevant to Malawi. By contributing to this wiki, you agree that all textual contributions must be:

  • licenced under the Creative Commons Licence (see Malawi360:Copyrights).
  • as unbiased as possible (e.g. Malawi360 content should neither support the Malawian Government or oppose it)

and accept that the contributions will be able to be edited by other users and altered, added to or deleted in any way, and furthermore that the webmaster has final say over inclusion of content in this website.

If you would like to report any offensive content (that you do not wish to edit yourself), please email the webmaster at webmaster@malawi360.com.

Please create a user if you are going to create new pages, although this is not necessary, it helps to identify the number of contributors. You will need to create a user if you are uploading any photos. Please ensure any photo you upload is relevant, for example, it shouldn't generally include yourself or your family! If the photo contains any people, please ensure they have given you permission to use the photo. If you did not take the photo yourself, ensure that you have permission to use the photo. Similarly, for text, please ensure you have the rights to use whatever text you contribute (e.g. copy and paste from other websites without the owners permission is generally not allowed unless the text is public domain or licensed under a creative commons or similar licence). Please also note that wikipedia is licenced under GFDL, not Creative Commons and these are (currently) incompatible, this means that you cannot copy text from wikipedia entries into Malawi360.

Why was Malawi360 set up?

This wiki was created by Stephen Thornhill in early 2008 in an attempt to promote Malawi on the web as a tourist destination, an excellent location for business and a great place to live and work. Stephen lived in Malawi for several months (in Nkhotakota) volunteering with a small medical Category:NGO. He found it very difficult to discover detailed information about Malawi prior to his visit, and many people he met didn't know where Malawi was let alone what it was like. He decided, once he returned to the UK to try to build a website that could be used as an online community by Malawians, ex-pats, tourists, students and anyone else with an interest in Malawi. By creating this site as a wiki (using the same software as that which powers wikipedia]) he could create an online community in which everyone could contribute. He funded the site with his own money, and hopes that over time it will pay for itself (with any remaining surpluses donated to an NGO working in Malawi).

"I fell in love with Malawi and its people the moment I first arrived in the country in February 2006 - I have never felt so welcomed or at home as I did living there. I feel that Malawi has so much potential waiting to be achieved, but that so few people know about Malawi, its landscape, people and culture. I hope that this website can reach out to some people in the wider world so that perhaps, they may consider finding out more about this beautiful country and maybe pay it a visit sometime. I also hope, in time, that it proves to become a useful and thriving community to those living in Malawi (both Malawians and ex-pats). As mentioned above, I've set this up as a non-commercial operation and I am initially paying for the administration and server. Hopefully, the adverts provided by Google and Amazon, will eventually provide enough money to cover these costs. Any remaining surplus will be donated to a Malawian NGO (as yet undecided). I hope you find this site useful, and I hope you are able to contribute some information yourself (about a town, village, hotel, beach or whatever - so long as it is about Malawi, its welcome here." Stephen Thornhill, March 2008 webmaster@malawi360.com
